Anyone else ready for a fish fry? It’s that time of year. If you’re planning one, I’ve got the perfect side dishes. Because let’s face it, any fish fry isn’t complete without some homemade hush puppies and a great, simple, summer slaw.

Bon Appétit!

Homemade Hush Puppies

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 4-5 green onions (green and white parts), finely diced
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups of oil for deep frying

Combine the cornmeal, self-rising flour, sugar, salt, cayenne pepper, and garlic powder in a large bowl.

Whisk until everything is lump free, then toss in the diced onions.

Add in the buttermilk and egg.

Mix the ingredients until well combined, but don't over mix.

Pour the oil into a large pan and heat the oil over medium heat.

Once the oil is nice and hot, start spooning in the batter.

Fry the hush puppies until they’re a nice golden brown.

Remove the hush puppies from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate.

Tasty Summer Slaw

  • 1 bag slaw mix
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 3 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 small onion, grated
  • 2 tsp celery seeds
  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Mix all ingredients in a bowl, chill for at least an hour, and serve.
