Do you have a favorite holiday movie? It’s a Wonderful Life? Home Alone? National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation? Or my personal favorite, A Christmas Story? Holiday movies are great. You can enjoy them as a tradition with your family, and they often help us reset our compass to the true meaning of the season.  

Thanksgiving is almost here. This holiday marks the beginning of a season in which parties and celebrations often culminate in a great feast. Many of these upcoming feasts will include alcoholic beverages. Socializing with friends and family over food and drinks can be enjoyable, but there are serious risks that accompany excessive drinking. So, right now might be a good time to consider a few pointers related to drinking alcohol.

Since its initial offering at the McAbee Center, “SilverSneakers” has taken off running through all Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority’s Activity Centers. If you are 65+ find out if you are eligible for SilverSneakers membership by participating in a PARA Café. The PARA Cafés are free and open to the public.

Ah fall.  SEC match ups, pumpkin spice, cooler temperatures, and colorful trees are germane to this wonderful time of year. Unfortunately, there’s something else associated with fall: the flu.   

Influenza, or the “flu,” is caused by a highly contagious virus that infects the upper respiratory system and sometimes the lungs. The unpleasant symptoms of the flu can be quite debilitating and cause you to miss out on a week or more of work or school as well as recreational activities. Who can afford to do that? 

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and two agencies in Tuscaloosa tackle the needs of domestic violence victims here in our community. 

Turning Point and Family Counseling Service are staples in West Alabama. As we bring awareness to the issue of domestic violence this month, the directors of these agencies, Equiller Mahone (Turning Point) and Larry Deavers (Family Counseling Service) have jointly written this column to highlight the dangers of teen dating violence.
