PreK Pals Ponderings: Local Students Having a Blast at the Summer Learning Academy Alicia Jenne

Meet the PreK Pals! These kids are fantastic, and they’re the stars of this column. Alicia Jenne’, a veteran teacher of little people, is the PreK Pals Lead Teacher for PreK#1 at Rock Quarry Elementary School and our inquisitive “reporter” – asking the hard-hitting questions everyone wants answers to.

Kathy Perkins is a facilitator for the Summer Learning Academy at Northington. She says the Academy is a great opportunity for current Tuscaloosa City Schools students entering grades K-5 to learn about topics that interest them.

Reading and math skills are integrated with high quality enrichment courses, allowing students to investigate topics such as paleontology, marine life, cultures around the world, dance, robotics, Google apps, and more,” Perkins said.

Students participating in the Summer Learning Academy explain what they’re learning to parents during showcase events. The first one was held in June; the second was set for early-July.

I talked to some former PreKPals, who now proudly tell me that they are KinderFriends, and asked them what the best thing about Summer Learning Academy was. Here they are, left to right…

Brady (5) “Playing with my friends and shearing sheep in the farm class was awesome!”

Emily (5) “I love the space class and the farm class. I got to make a rocket ship! I want to come to Summer Learning Academy every summer. Everyone should come!”

Olive (5) “I just love that my friends are always here. Everything about Summer Learning Academy is awesome!”

Hosanna (5) “The Barn class (farm) is the best. I love the books and playing there!”

David (4) “I learned about sharks! I’m learning more about dinosaurs, too.

Isaiah (4) “I love changing groups. Everything is fun and I want all of my friends from Rock Quarry to come next time!”

The PreKPals are certainly making good use of their time this summer. The Summer Learning Academy at Northington is going to ensure that they walk into kindergarten ready to share all that they learned... and they think all of you should join in next summer, too!
