Tuscaloosa Backpack Coalition Kicks off School Supply Drive Featured

While most people are thinking about vacation this time of year, the Tuscaloosa Backpack Coalition is in full swing, working hard to raise funds for 2,000 plus city and county preregistered students in need of backpacks and required school supplies for the 2016-2017 school year.

Tuscaloosa Backpack Coalition is currently holding its annual school supply drive, collecting school supplies for students in need.

The Tuscaloosa Backpack Coalition’s Apples for Education is underway now at Center Court at University Mall. Volunteers will be on hand to distribute apples at the Apples for Education table every day through Sunday, July 24.

Pam Rogers, coordinator for the Tuscaloosa Backpack Coalition, says the need is great.

“The Tuscaloosa Backpack Coalition works with all city and county schools as counselors provide students with a take home paper for parents to fill out requesting assistance,” Rogers said. “We also receive names from DHR, Tuscaloosa's One Place, Tuscaloosa Housing Authority, as well as area churches and ministries.”

There are red and green apples available this year. Each red apple represents an area student in need of assistance. Those who choose red will purchase school supplies and bring them back to Center Court at University Mall. Each green apple represents $1 toward backpack supplies. Money can be donated at Center Court as well.

In addition to the Apples for Education table at University Mall, special collection bins will be located at area agencies, businesses and churches.

The backpacks will be distributed in July and August at several area locations. To see a full list of distribution sites and to learn more information about donations, visit the Tuscaloosa Backpack Coalition’s official website
