Tuscaloosa Mayor Appointed Senior Fellow with Harvard Kennedy School of Government City of Tuscaloosa

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox was recently appointed as a senior fellow with the Harvard Kennedy School of Government’s Program on Crisis Leadership for his effective leadership during times of crisis. Maddox has served as a fellow since 2014.

In the upcoming year, as part of the Program on Crisis Leadership, Maddox will partner with the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative’s executive education courses involving mayors, senior city officials, emergency management/homeland security professionals, and Harvard degree courses to discuss lessons learned from Tuscaloosa’s experience recovering from the 2011 tornado.

"It is an honor to work with the top experts in the country to better prepare communities to respond and recover from catastrophic events," said Maddox. "The heroic work of so many in the response to the April 27, 2011 tornado is a blueprint on how communities can respond to tragedy with strategic resiliency.  It’s humbling to share our experiences, and know that it will be utilized to save lives in the future."

The “Ready in Advance” approach to crisis leadership that Mayor Maddox has implemented has gained national recognition and highlights the Tuscaloosa City administration’s early preparedness and emergency response efforts to potential crisis events.
