Tuscaloosa to Honor Veterans on Memorial Day Featured

A Memorial Day service to honor military veterans is planned for Monday, May 28 at the Tuscaloosa Veterans Memorial Park. The hour-long program, which begins at 9 a.m., is free and open to the public.

The guest speaker at the Tuscaloosa Memorial Day service is Sergeant Evan Van Nostrand, United States Marine Corps (ret).

Sergeant Van Nostrand grew up on Long Island, New York, and enlisted in The United States Marine Corps in 2005 immediately following graduation from Smithtown High School. Upon completion of recruit training, he was assigned to 3rd Battalion 2nd Marine Regiment 2nd Marine Division in 2006. Sergeant Van Nostrand would deploy to Iraq in 2006 and 2007. In 2009, Sergeant Van Nostrand deployed as part of the Battalion Landing Team for the 22d Marine Expeditionary Unit. Upon returning from his deployment with the 22d Marine Expeditionary Unit, Sergeant Van Nostrand was assigned to 2nd Battalion 6th Marines 2nd Marine Division. In August of 2010, Sergeant Van Nostrand was deployed to Afghanistan. In September of 2012, Sergeant Van Nostrand was medically retired from The United States Marine Corps due to injuries sustained due to combat operations.

The program will feature an Armed Forces Medley and Gun Volley Salute and Taps by the Tuscaloosa County American Legion Honor Guard.

 

After the ceremony guests are encouraged to tour the Park’s military exhibits and visit the Honor Roll of Veterans and Congressional Medal of Honor monuments. The Memorial Day Ceremony is sponsored by the Veterans Memorial Park Association and the Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority (PARA).
