Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox Exploring Run for Alabama Governor Featured

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walter Maddox is forming an exploratory committee to run for Alabama governor. In a videotaped statement on Thursday, Maddox confirmed he’s considering entering the 2018 race.

“Today, I am announcing the formation of a political committee to help me explore the possibility of running for Governor in 2018,” Maddox said in his statement. “The decision to form the committee was easy. By taking this step, I am complying with Alabama’s election and ethics laws and continuing our tradition of transparency.”

Maddox, a Democrat, also said he’s not changing parties, though he said some have suggested this would be beneficial.

“I’m a Democrat. While many have urged me to change parties for the sake of political convenience, that would be dishonest. Dishonest with you and dishonest with myself.

We don’t need any more dishonesty. The days of running for the Democratic Party or for the Republican Party need to end. It’s time to run for the people of Alabama.”

The 44-year-old Maddox, who has served as Tuscaloosa’s mayor since 2005, also provided his campaign slogan, alluding to the recent political turmoil and scandal that has rocked Alabama in recent years.

“It’s time to make Alabama proud again.”

In terms of a timeline, Maddox would only say that, “Your voice matters, and in the months ahead, I look forward to beginning this journey of creating a New Covenant by listening to your concerns, understanding your hopes, and exploring this amazing opportunity to be your advocate in the Governor’s office.”
