Junior Achievement (JA) of Tuscaloosa County announced that Gary Nichols of McAbee Construction has been selected from more than 248,000 U.S. volunteers to earn the organization’s premier award for volunteerism, the Bronze Leadership Award.
Seven of the area’s most distinguished residents were honored by being inducted into the Tuscaloosa County Civic Hall of Fame on Sept. 20. The 2018 Tuscaloosa County Civic Hall of Fame inductees are (L to R): Jimmy Bank, son of Bert Bank, Harrison Taylor, Jordan Plaster, Yvonne Thomas Wells, Gene “Poodgie” Poole, Ken W. Swindle, and Dr. Malcolm Portera. Each was honored for contributing their unique talents and vision to bettering the Tuscaloosa community in some way.
The Tuscaloosa County Civic Hall of Fame was born during The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama’s 100th anniversary year in 2000. With this year’s class, 116 citizens have been honored as members of the Hall of Fame. Inductees names will be added to the Civic Hall of Fame monument in Government Plaza.
The Community Foundation of West Alabama named its 2018 class of Pillars of West Alabama in June at the Indian Hills Country Club. Each year, the board of directors selects recipients based on their life’s contribution to the West Alabama area. This year marked the 15th year of the program.
When Nikki Hill was a high school student studying at American Christian Academy, she fell in love with English literature. Inspired by her own experience, Hill now teaches a new generation of students at the very same school.
The Tuscaloosa Police Department recently received a special award. On July 24, in the Tuscaloosa City Council Chambers, the Department of Defense Office of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) presented the Patriot Award to Tuscaloosa Police Chief Steven Anderson.

Tuscaloosa resident and Wells Fargo team member Devon Averett received the Patriot Employer Award from the Office of the Secretary of Defense Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Nicolas Britto presented the award to Averett during a ceremony held on Jan. 31.
