Tuscaloosa’s SMP Automotive Facility: Work Underway Samvardhana Motherson Peguform

Back in August, SMP Automotive Systems announced it would invest over $150 million in a 700,000 square foot facility in Cottondale, near the Mercedes-Benz plant in Vance. The plant is expected to eventually create 650 new jobs for workers within its first four years of operation.

And now, that appears closer than ever before. Ground is being moved at the site of the new SMP Automotive Facility, which will be located in the Cedar Cove Technology Park.  Construction is slated to begin over the summer.

“We are very excited to finally establish a footprint in the Tuscaloosa region. The new plant will be a clear sign of a successful partnership with our customer and the state of Alabama,” said Vivek Chaand Sehgal, chairman of the Samvardhana Motherson Group (SMG), in a release from the Alabama Department of Commerce.

SMP Automotive will manufacture various exterior and interior components for future models produced at the Mercedes assembly plant in Tuscaloosa County.

How soon will SMP Automotive begin hiring for new jobs? Very soon. Apparently, the company is already in the process of hiring the first wave of new workers, including engineers, technicians and other key personnel.
