West Alabama Works received the Governor’s Award for Overall Best Regional Workforce Council at the Alabama Works statewide conference Wednesday in Birmingham. The award honors the top workforce council for the state.

“West Alabama Works is truly an industry-driven workforce model, which makes the organization so successful. As an industry leader, I can share concerns from my perspective to help create solutions for problems facing our region’s employers. I’m incredibly proud Gov. Kay Ivey honored West Alabama Works with this award,” said West Alabama Works Chairman and McAbee Construction President and COO Gary Nichols.

West Alabama Works, which covers Tuscaloosa, Hale, Green, Bibb, Pickens, Marengo, Sumter and Lamar counties, placed first among the seven workforce system regions for exceptional success and outstanding service to business and industry. North Alabama Works placed second, and Southeast Alabama Works placed third.

“This accomplishment underscores the incredible strides our team and our workforce partners have made towards this effort,” said Kimberly McMurray, Chair of the Board of Directors, Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama. “We are excited to be recognized as a leader and innovator in workforce models, and thrilled to see the results in our region’s successful workforce.”

West Alabama Works’ mission is to ensure that everyone in West Alabama is provided with the tools, resources and support they need to ensure a bright and prosperous future in Alabama’s workforce. Some of the organization’s focuses include the Worlds of Work Career Expo, rural outreach events, career technical education and career pathways.
